MediaArts at Capital Children's Museum

This collection features animation and video projects created by students, staff, and visitors to the National Learning Center's Capital Children's Museum's MediaArts program, from 1987 through 2001.

This shows work from the Animation Lab and U-TV, and footage of the now-closed museum at 3rd and H Street NE in Washington DC.

Work digitized from a 3/4" U-matic tape source has a "U" prefix to the item number (ex. U015)

Work digitized from a VHS tape source has a "V" prefix to the item number (ex. V015)

Work uploaded from a digital source has a "D" prefix to the item number (ex. D015). Note that color information can be seen in the Quicktime versions; the others stripped the color for some reason when they were uploaded).

Torn and cut-out paper animation by Christopher Grotke. Music is Junkyard, a b-side of a Grace Jones single. Started in November 1989 and took about a month of steady work. I wanted to test the new animation stand and FAX EOS frame controller, do a long project, and demonstrate animation to museum visitors while working in the new Animation Lab.

Michael Jackson stopped by the museum for an official visit (BAD era), and staff captured his time in the U-TV interactive television studio. Not terribly interesting, but he poses with museum director Ann Lewin, MediaWorks director Stan Woodward, video producer Jesse Vaughn, and others while a Fairlight operator plays with effects. For some reason, this tape was made into a loop, and repeats for quite a while. Weâll spare you the full effect. April 4th 1990. He gave us all LA Gear shoes, btw.

May be the master version. 3rd and H was in production and we got Cher, visiting the museum for another purpose, to answer a question for us. Favorite shape? A pyramid. She was visiting in the museum's Mexico exhibit. Says 9/19/1990 on the tape.

This was an attempt to create the worldâs longest drawn on film loop during a project called Animate 88. Visitors to the museum were encouraged to drawn at least 24 frames, and hundreds of people participated. It wasnât the worldâs longest, but it was shown at the end of the day and later made into a loop to play in the museumâs Storyteller Theater. Stan Woodwardâs idea, if I recall correctly. Music added later.
